Our Vision: To grow Catholic, Christian young people,
who are confident, connected lifelong learners, inspired by the teachings of Jesus,
and who make a positive difference in their community.

Tuamuki/Principal's Welcome
We are so blessed to live here in Palmerston North and to have been safe from the weather extremes experienced by so much of the North Island. It has been wonderful to see the ways our learners and whanau have responded to Jesus’ call to reach out to others.
We are a welcoming community who respond practically, with compassion, understanding and sensitivity to the needs of others. We participate positively, in service, to contribute to the common good of all.
Our kaiako gave our learners opportunities during literacy to make cards and write letters to the children at St Joseph's School of Wairoa and many of our families dropped off food supplies to the Diocesan Centre three weeks ago.
As part of our non uniform fundraiser, our tamariki and staff wore pango and ma (black and white) and raised $342.70 to send to Hawkes Bay. We respond in this way because the Gospel message calls us to be the hands and feet of Christ. We are in solidarity with our Catholic school communities who are suffering.
Responding to those affected by Cyclone Gabrielle Last month, Cyclone Gabrielle wreaked havoc across the North Island, significantly affecting many in our diocese. People across the Diocese of Palmerston North have come together to provide much-needed relief efforts to those affected in Hawkes Bay and Wairoa.
Monday evening, Wendy Morgan from the Ministry of Education, gave a presentation about the Positive Behaviour for Learning programme.
Thank you to the parents who attended. I would also like to express a special thank you to all the staff who stayed back and supported the presentation. Your willingness to practise and teach this behaviour and learn more about it, demonstrates your commitment to our school values and vision: We recognise and respect the uniqueness of every individual within the school community as made in the image and likeness of God.
If you were unable to attend last night, please see Claire Dillon or myself for information.
From time to time parents have concerns about their children at school both with learning and play. If you have a concern or need clarification about an event, please contact your child’s teacher.
The Welcome Back picnic is definitely on this Friday, rain, hail or shine. If it's wet, we will spread out in the hall, and the food truck and barbeque will back up there. It will be lovely to see you all somewhere in the school grounds on Friday from 5pm onwards.
This is a chance to mix and mingle with other families, the pool will be open if the weather allows although you will need to supervise your own child. The picnic is BYO (bring your own) takeaways, and beverages, however there will be barbequed sausages available to purchase for $2 and a food truck Tuss's Tucker - Tasty Thai Fusion and an Ice Cream van.

School Board
At our most recent board meeting, Analena Siu stepped down as our Presiding Member and I was appointed the new Presiding Member. Analena has led the board through a busy and important period, where we have appointed our new Tumuaki/Principal and introduced a new Uniform. Analena is remaining on the board. Thank you Analena for your Leadership and Guidance.
The following positions are held within the Board:
Chris McPhee - Presiding Member
Geraldine Clear - Deputy Presiding Member
The recent Board Meeting was also our first meeting with Christine Cosgrove as our new Tumuaki/Principal. The school is currently in the process of arranging a Powhiri to formally welcome Christine as our new Tumuaki/Principal along with new family/whānau and have our Parish and Community Bless her. More details will be coming on the Powhiri. The blessing will take place at 9:30am Mass on 19 March. We invite all our family/whānau to join with us and ask that you bring a plate of food to share for morning tea and hope you will be able to join us in welcoming Christine to her new role at St James. The Board is now supporting Christine in her process of advertising and appointing a Tumuaki Tuarua/Deputy Principal for our School.
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the St James’ Community includes not only our Students, Staff, Whānau, and our neighbours in Hokowhitu. During pick up and drop off times, it can be very hectic outside the school. For the safety of all, please only park in legal parking spaces outside the school, especially avoiding the yellow dotted area in front of the school field.
On Monday the School hosted a session on Positive Behaviour for Learning. This was a very informative session and I wish to thank St James' and the Ministry of Education for providing it. Thank you for those that came to the session and hope to see more of you at future sessions like this.
This Friday is our Welcome Back Picnic. An event in our school calendar that I look forward to each year, as I am sure you and your children do as well. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Kidney Kids - One small way we can make life easier for others which costs us nothing, is to collect stamps, can tabs, and wine bottle tops!
You will find collection boxes for these in the School Office foyer. If, as a family you don't already set these items aside for Kidney Kids at Starship and the Missions, you may like to start, as a very visible witness to demonstrating Jesus' example of LOVE. Encourage neighbours and family to do the same. There is no deadline.
Yummy Apple stickers - Please continue to collect these throughout the year. Collection sheets are also available from the school office or can be downloaded here.
